Florence Cousins

Florence was born on the 26th of July 1892 in Crowfield, Suffolk. She was the second child of Robert Cousins and Annie Eliza Race.

At the age of 13 Florence left school and started working as a domestic servant. One of her places of work was at Mill House in Great Glemham. Whilst there she started courting her future husband John Berry Balaam.

February 27th 1915 aged 22 Florence married John Balaam in Campsea Ash church. John was aged 22 and also born in Crowfield.

Later that year Florence and John had their first child, Arthur, sadly in 1932 aged 17 he died. That same year their daughter Daisy died aged 13. 10 years previous, in 1922 they had a son called Eric, he died aged 2 and a half months.

Florence and John went on to have 9 children in total.

• Arthur born 1915 died 1932
• Herman Edward born 25th May 1917 died 1996
• Daisy F born 1919 died 1932
• Eric born 1922 died 1922
• Nellie Irene born 1924
• Phillip Stanley born 1926
• June E born 1929
• Evelyn Janet born 1932
• Edna born 1st May 1938

The loss of 3 children took its toll on Florence. She suffered with bad depression and had a nervous break down of which she never recovered from. In 1938 Florence walked out of the family home.

Florence spent time in St. Audrey Hospital, Melton, a place for the clinically depressed.

John struggled to cope alone with 5 children all under the age of 14. Because of this Edna was put up for adoption and had her name changed to Jane.
